My SRi snapped a cambelt at around 30mph, I took the head off to find just one bent valve and no other damage, no holed pistons, nothing, got the head skimmed while it was off and went straight back to monstering that engine, the punishment I gave that engine and it never missed a beat again.

I had 2 mk1s , both were used for beach racing (speedway style) until the steering rack pulled out of the bulkhead....

But it was a pretty awesome (Uber cool and rare now) 244 GLT 😇 saloon. Would love to see you do a barn find 244 GLT or 740/60 turbo, or better still a 360 GLT which I had ( and miss selling to this day ).

Might be right about PHEV being the best. Normally I hate them but this vehicle has to be a mile muncher and it will be a while before a BEV can match the range of a TDI.

What a relief to see a properly kept car. It’s not that hard to keep it dry and away from pigeons and stuff -as long as you have a garage or even a shed.

We had the Opel (Vauxhall) Kadett GSI 16S here in South Africa that was a homologation car for a race series called Group N. The 16VS or 'Superboss' as it was named was created as a challenge to the BMW 325is. It was 167hp and won the series in '91 and '92 becoming an absolute legend here.

Honda needs to bring these back, if they have extra horse power, camper conversions, add in better inverters, solar panels, 400 watts for god sakes! A cooler to keep drinks in or have a version of it like the ridgelines truck spare tire compartment. can we get one like that! :)

What a great episode Johnny. A car of the people! I had a Mk2 Astra SXi for a while which had the 1.8 ltr version of that beautifully smooth engine. The dash was more conventional with large analogue dials. I really enjoyed it until it was stolen overnight and turned up wheel-less and trashed. Lovely memories....

Memories - I had one of the first MK1 Astra GTE's in white - it used to annoy the hell out of XR3 owners who always wanted to race it. Personally I still prefer the MK1 but have nothing bad to say about the later versions. Those were exiting times in the motor industry and a time when you could phone the Tax office and get a reply or call your Doctor and have an appointment the same day. Where did it all go wrong!

I passed my test in 2000 and remember them Astra’s going about in the late 90s a lot , a few of my friends had GTE replicas in the early 00s my 1st car was a 1.2nova and I had modified Astra GTE seats to fit. Love the satin black at the back too great original car very nice. Where were at now tho people we need to start paying very close attention to the political demographic changes that we are seeing gathering pace now - very important brilliant car 👍🏻
